It is a probabletumor suppressor involved in cell growth, cell proliferation and apoptosis. TOPORS regulatesp53/TP53 stability through ubiquitin-dependent degradation. It may regulate chromatin modificationthrough sumoylation of several chromatin modification-associated proteins. It may be involved in DNAdamage-induced cell death through IKBKE sumoylation. Defects in TOPORS are the cause of retinitispigmentosa type 31 P31).
