Butyrylcholine is a small molecule regulator of colonic ion transport, endogenously produced by colonocytes. It acts as an agonist at both nicotinic and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. This compound is used in research to study cholinergic control of intestinal secretion, epithelial transport, and related in vitro and ex vivo models.
