DAPI (4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) is a fluorescent dye that binds strongly to DNA and can be detected using fluorescence microscopy. Because DAPI can cross intact cell membranes, it can stain both live and fixed cells, although staining is more efficient in fixed cells. Its molecular formula is C₁₆H₁₅N₅·2HCl, its molecular weight is 350.25 g/mol, and its CAS number is 28718-90-3.
