4-Aminobenzoic acid (PABA) is a UV-absorbing compound whose photochemical activity can induce DNA damage. It also modulates tissue metabolism by increasing oxygen uptake and potentially enhancing MAO-mediated serotonin degradation, which is studied in contexts of fibrosis research both in vitro and in vivo.

Bioactivity

• In Vivo:
  Plants produce PABA in their chloroplasts and store it as a glucose ester (PABA-Glc) in their tissues. Humans lack the enzymes to convert PABA to folate, so require folate from dietary sources such as green leafy vegetables. In humans, most people have colon bacteria that generate PABA.
