Members of the MMP family areinvolved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes, such asembryonic development, reproduction, migration and tissue remodeling. Most MMPs are secreted aszymogens requiring activation by an extracellular proteinase. MMP14, along with other MT-MMPscontains a potential transmembrane domain suggesting that they are not secreted but expressed atthe cell surface.
