It acts as an HO-1 inducer and is composed of heme, which can bind to oxygen. Furthermore, hemoglobin transports other gases such as carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfides. It also absorbs excess oxygen in tissues, functioning as an antioxidant.
