Description | Mumps virus (Muv), one nonsegmented single-stranded RNA virus, is a member of the genus Rubulavirus in the family Paramyxoviridae. The MuV nucleocapsid protein (NP), one of the major structural proteins of Muv, is composed of an N-terminal domain and a reportedly unstructured C-terminal tail with 549 amino acids of length. The N-terminal domain is suggested to be the part primarily responsible for RNA encapsidation, P protein binding, and formation of the nucleocapsid. The NP packages the genomic RNA into a filamentous complex termed the nucleocapsid. In the cytoplasm of an infected cell, the nucleocapsid is employed by the viral RNA polymerase as the template for both transcription and genome replication. |
