Description

Levofloxacin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat a number of bacterial infections including acute bacterial sinusitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, chronic prostatitis, and some types of gastroenteritis. Along with other antibiotics it may be used to treat tuberculosis, meningitis, or pelvic inflammatory disease. It is administered by mouth or intravenously.(In Vitro):Levofloxacin shows inhibition effects to M. tuberculosis susceptible strains OFLO, LVFX, and SPFX with MIC50 values of 1.0, 0.5 and 0.25 μg/mL, respectively。(In Vivo):Levofloxacin (10.7 mg/kg; i.p., once daily for 10 days or 3 weeks) time-dependently induces toxic effects on liver and heart in albino mice.

Bioactivity

• In Vivo:
  Animal model: Matured male Albino mice. Dosage: 10.7 mg/kg. Administration: Intraperitoneal injection; 10.7 mg/kg, once daily for 10 days or 3 weeks. Result: Induced severe congestion of blood vessels in the portal area, central veins with inflammatory cells infiltration, necrosis with pyknosis of cardiac muscle nuclei and apoptosis, degeneration and necrosis of hepatocytes.
