| Source | Haptoglobin is an acute phase protein synthesized in the liver. In immunoelectrophoresis it has an alpha-2 mobility. It forms a group of heterogeneous proteins consisting of four peptide chains, two alpha and two beta chains. The molecular weight is about 86,000. Haptoglobin combines with haemoglobin and is then rapidly catabolized. Concentration is elevated in cases of inflammation and reduced in liver disease and haemolytic anaemia. Freund’s complete adjuvant is used in the first step of the immunization procedure. |
