Description | A total of 11 HSV envelope glycoproteins have been identified, some of them are strong inducers of antibody response in humans. The envelope glycoprotein G (gG) proteins are the only HSV antigens known to induce type-specific antibody responses despite the high amino acid similarity between HSV-1 and HSV-2. Hence, they are utilized in serological assays to distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection. Glycoprotein G-1 (gG-1) of HSV-1 comprises 238 amino acids, while gG-2 of HSV-2 contains 699 amino acids. Additionally, the gG-2 protein is unique among the HSV proteins in that it is cleaved into one secreted portion (sgG-2) and one part anchored to the virion (mgG-2). |
