CD3: Cluster of differentiation 3
This T-cell receptor helps to activate both cytotoxic T-cells (CD8+ naive T-cells) and T helper cells (CD4+ naive T-cells). Present as a protein complex, it comprises 4 distinct chains. In mammals, this complex contains a gamma, delta and two epsilon chains.
The CD3γ, CD3δ and CD3ε chains are highly related cell-surface proteins and contain a single extracellular immunoglobulin domain.
CD3 antigen can be found bound to the membranes of all mature T-cells and in virtually no other cell type. This high specificity, combined with its presence at all stages of T-cell development makes it a useful T-cell marker for IHC tissue sections. The antigen is also present in almost all T-cell lymphomas and leukaemias, allowing their differentiation from similar B-cell and myeloid neoplasms.
