Description | Glycoprotein B (gB) is the fusion protein among EBV envelope glycoproteins, which is responsible for inserting into the host cell membrane and refolding to promote the fusion of the viral envelope and cell membrane. It is required for EBV infection of both B cells and epithelial cells. As a trimeric single-pass transmembrane protein with five extracellular domains, several regions of gB participate in the conformational changes required for fusion and/or interactions with the proteins that trigger gB. The gB protein has shown its potential in human cytomegalovirus subunit vaccines, preventing 50% of primary infections in postpartum healthy women. Hopefully, the gB protein is a promising target antigen for vaccine development against EBV. |
