Animal-free Reagents and the 3Rs in Research

For many years, animals have been used in research to explore important scientific issues and increase our understanding of numerous diseases. However, animal models and animal derived components are often costly and can lead to experimental limitations, such as poor relevance to human biology and can raise ethical concerns regarding their use and welfare. Alternative models and sources for common lab reagents can address some of these concerns. In the last decade or so, advances in science and technology have meant that there are now realistic options to replace the use of animals for research and reagent production.

What are the 3Rs?

The principles of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) were developed over 50 years ago, providing a framework for performing more humane animal research. Since then, the principles have been embedded in legislation and regulations for the use of animals in scientific procedures, as well as in the policies of organisations that fund or conduct animal research.

Definitions of the 3Rs

Replacement Methods which avoid or replace the use of animals. Accelerating the development and use of models and tools, based on the latest science and technologies, to address important scientific questions without the use of animals.
Reduction Methods which minimise the number of animals used per experiment. Appropriately designed and analysed animal experiments that are robust and reproducible, and truly add to the knowledge base.
Refinement Methods which minimise animal suffering and improve welfare. Advancing animal welfare by exploiting the latest in vivo technologies and by improving understanding of the impact of welfare on scientific outcomes.

Biorbyt is pleased to supply a range of animal-free products by Invitria. From serum to media, we can provide a wide range of reagents as alternatives to consider when planning your research.

Catalog #ProductDescription
orb84879 Recombinant Human Transferrin protein Optiferrin is a Blood-Free recombinant human transferrin that has been used in HEK, CHO, iPSC, hematopoietic, VERO, RBC, stem, primary, and other cells. Optiferrin exhibits exceptional purity and biological activity. It provides superior reliability, consistency, and performance compared to serum- derived alternatives.
orb93603 Insulin Transferrin Selenium Ethanolamine protein Insulin-Transferrin-Selenium (ITS) is a basal media supplement, that adds the benefits of Ethanolamine to the proven formula of ITS.
orb535117 OptiVERO Complete Media Kit OptiVERO is optimized for VERO-based virus production in both 2D and 3D culture formats. This complete media kit is offered as a liquid base media with frozen protein and media supplements. OptiVERO does not contain any blood-derived components or plant hydrolysates and is Blood-Free and chemically defined.
orb419911 Recombinant Human Serum Albumin - Cellastim-S Cellastim S® is recombinant human serum albumin that is completely blood-free and has been optimized specifically to enhance the performance in animal-free cell culture media due to the favorable lipid profile and other engineered attributes of the molecule. Cellastim S is ideally suited for a variety of different stem, primary, and production cell types that include immune cells, VERO, Mesenchymal Stem Cells, HEK, and CHO.
orb420049 ITSE + A Animal-Free Solution Insulin-Transferrin-Selenium (ITS) is a basal media supplement, that adds the benefits of Ethanolamine and Albumin to the proven formula of ITS. Albumin has many benefits in cell culture and expansion.
orb421052 ITS Animal-Free Insulin-Transferrin-Selenium (ITS) is a basal media supplement, and can be used to reduce the amount of serum needed to culture cells.
orb624144 Excipient grade recombinant human serum albumin Exbumin™ is a recombinant human serum albumin. It is blood-free and one of the few excipients available to improve viral stability for vaccines and gene therapies. Exbumin is also used to maintain tissue viability during cryo-preservation or storage. Exbumin helps to stabilize cells and tissue used in cell therapy and regenerative medicine applications. Exbumin has been approved for use as an excipient in injectable therapeutics by regulatory agencies.
orb624145 Recombinant human lysozyme Lysobac® is a recombinant human lysozyme that is suitable for uses as a preservative in foods and beverages, diagnostic applications, bioprocessing, and life science research. Lysobac is four times more active per mg for lysing Micrococcus and E. coli, when compared with the highly variable chicken lysozyme and thus is a more effective as a preservative.
orb624146 OptiPEAK HEK293t Complete Media Kit OptiPEAK® HEK293t was optimized for chemically defined blood-free expansion of adherent HEK 293t cells for production of viral vectors used in gene therapy or vaccines. OptiPEAK HEK293t is supplied as a two-part kit to make one liter of complete media. A 40 mL frozen concentrated protein supplement is supplied and should be thawed, as directed, and combined with 960 mL of base media to make one liter of complete media. OptiPEAK HEK293t is suitable for research use.
orb707454 Human Optibumin albumin protein Optibumin is optimized specifically for applications, including bioconjugation, diluents, iPSC, and tissue preservation. Optibumin is supplied as a 10% Liquid.
